Can I just say how happy I am to be back home??? I always felt a little out of place in Virginia, especially once I went vegetarian/vegan. But I fit in great in Seattle! I’m definitely a Seattle-ite at heart.  :)

Remember those goodies I bought at Sidecar for Pigs Peace?

The dark chocolate peanut butter is an old fav, and we all know it’s amazing.

I had heard so much about the cacao bliss, and I was excited to give it a try. Memorial Day was actually our 5th anniversary, so we bought some strawberries to eat with the chocolate.

I had such high expectations for it, but unfortunately, I didn’t think it was nearly as amazing as I had heard. I found that the strawberries were better without it. Maybe it’s just that it’s too coconut oily for me? I’m not sure. It was expensive, so I want to use the rest of it up. How do you guys use it? I tried a little in my oatmeal, and that was much better, but not so good that I would buy this again. Bummer.

The candy bars were good (of course)! It’s been years since I’ve had a candy bar, but these were close to their inspiration candy bars. I mean, they wouldn’t fool anyone, but they were good in their own right. It’s not something that I would buy all the time because they are still high in sugar, but it’s a nice occasional treat. Milky Ways used to be my favorite, but I think I liked the Jokerz (snickers) bar the best. Yay for vegan candy bars!

Since I had about two weeks off before my classes started, Pete and I took advantage of it and spent a lot of time in Seattle. It’s only rained once I think since I’ve been home, and the weather has been BEAUTIFUL! Perfect, in the 80’s, and not humid at all. So much better than VA!

And, of course, Pike Place Market!

Thrive

Thrive is a relatively new mostly raw restaurant in Seattle. The pictures aren’t that great because they were taken from my phone.

To start, we ordered the flax cracker nachos, which comes with nacho sauce, guacamole, salsa, and onion cashew cream. They were out of flax crackers, so we got lots of veggies instead. The sauces were so good! I really want to try and recreate the onion cashew cream because it was so good! I can’t wait to have this dish again, but with the crackers because I bet it only gets better.

We split the teriyaki noodles for our entree, and it was so good!!! Actually, “good” doesn’t begin to describe how tasty it was. It was kelp noodles and lots of fresh veggies in a yummy teriyaki sauce, topped with cashews and dates. YUM!!!

For dessert, we split a piece of key lime pie. This was the BEST key lime pie I have ever had! In fact, we liked all our food so much, that we went back a few days later and for the same meal, except we tried the sushi instead of the nachos. Oh man, the sushi was fantastic! I’ve also tried the chocolate mouse pie which is super creamy and delicious, the Boutenko’s Best green smoothie, and the ginger lemonade, and all the drinks were really yummy too.

As you can tell, I love this place and I’m sure I’ll be back again and again!

Hello fellow bloggers! Needless to say, my life has been pretty busy lately. I started my bar review classes this week, so I spend all day either in class or in the library doing the copious amounts of homework assigned. I planned ahead and did all of today’s homework yesterday, so I have a day off!

I have oh so much to share with all of you, but I’ll try not to make this post too long. Later this week I’ll try and finish up posting about all the good food we had on our trip across the country. We got really lucky, and I never once had to eat a plain baked potato for dinner. I had some amazing food!

Last week, I was lucky enough to receive not one, not two, but THREE great packages in the mail! The first one was a treasure chest full of goodies from Rachel at Pirate’s Booty!

Isn’t that so cute?

Inside were two bags of Veggie Booty and two bags of Tings, along with lots of booty head stickers and temporary tattoos (which my nephews have been enjoying, lol). I had never had veggie booty before. It was very…healthy tasting, ha ha. All of the adults thought it was just ok, but both of my nephews (ages 1 and 2) LOVED it! The 2 year old doesn’t really care to eat anything and he’s an extremely picky eater, but even he was chowing down. They finished both of the bags themselves in two days! Now Tings have been a favorite snack of mine and Pete’s for a while now, so we already knew that we would love them. But the surprising part was my sister, who loved them too! I only say surprising because she is also a very picky eater and doesn’t usually like my “weird vegan food”. But she liked the Tings so much that she had me pick her up a bag at Safeway that same day.

The next fun package I received was from Bruce at ZICO Coconut Water.

natural

I had never had coconut water before, so I was really excited to try it. I received all three flavors: natural, mango, and passion fruit. The flavor is kind of hard to explain – kind of sweet, and kind of electrolyte-y. I know that’s not a word, but you know that kind of subdued flavor that gatorade other sports drinks have? That’s kind of what I tasted, so I assume it’s the electrolytes. It’s good, but different from anything else I’ve had. The mango was definitely our favorite flavor. I’ve been using them in our morning smoothie, and they work great! Not as heavy as soymilk, but creamier than water. Yum!

The last package was from Lindsy, who was generous enough to send me Ani Phyo’s new dessert cookbook! I was so, so, SO happy to see that many of the desserts could be made without a dehydrator. Even though I have been incorporating a lot more raw foods into my diet, I’m not ready to invest in a dehydrator yet. My parents (even my dad!) are both excited for me to start making some of the recipes from that book. I went out and bought some raw nuts and raw cacao powder, so hopefully I’ll have some time next weekend. I was so impressed with the way the recipes looked, that I ordered her other cookbook, which also looks amazing! I had heard a lot of negative comments about how many times her picture was in the book, so I was expecting it to contain a really ridiculous amount of pictures, but it didn’t at all. Even though it did contain more pictures than most cookbooks do, the focus was definitely on the food, and I’m so excited to start making some yummy food from it!

On a kind of related note, I received Isa’s new book, Vegan Brunch a week ago, and I’ve been so busy that I haven’t even read it yet! Travesty! I always read through cookbooks as soon as I get them, so I’m itching to get my hands on that book today! I also received Sweet Freedom this week!!! I was super excited about this because I’ve already tried a lot of the recipes and know that they’re amazing! So if you don’t have it yet, you must get it!

I’ve been eating super healthy ever since bar review started because I need to feel as good as possible and have as much energy as possible. It’s amazing how exhausting and draining it is to sit and study for 10 hours. To make my morning smoothie even healthier, I’ve added Vitamineral Green Powder, chlorella, spirulina, hemp protein powder, and maca powder. It’s like good health in a cup! For lunch I pack a huge salad with romaine, spinach, zucchini, cucumber, black sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds. For fat, I either add an avocado or “pizza cheese” (from one of my favorite new blogs, Choosing Raw. Love it!). Sometimes I throw on a few garbanzo beans too. This salad keeps me full until dinner, which is great! By the time I get home, I’m tired and not in the mood to cook, so dinners have been really simple.

I hope to be back later this week with some more posts. I miss reading all of your blogs (my google reader is so full!!!), but I promise that I’ll be back full force after the bar (which is July 28, 29, and 30)!

ETA: I also updated the A Dong post. The wordpress app for iPhones is kind of wonky, so I didn’t realize that it hadn’t posted my pictures.

Look at all my goodies! I’ll be sure to post reviews on the candy bars and the cocoa bliss as soon as I try them.

Seattle living

There is no reason to go to starbucks in Seattle. There are tons of cute little espresso shops. Right now we’re at Zokas, which is right across the street from Mighty Os. The perfect breakfast!

A Dong

Super yummy Vietnamese place in Des Moines, Iowa. We all highly recommend it!

I don’t remember the numbers or names of all the dishes we had, but they were all great! There was a negetive review on happy cow, so I was a little nervous, but our waiter was so knowledgable about everything on the menu! There’s a seperate vegetarian menu, and the majority were already vegan or could easily be made vegan. If I lived closer, I would definitely go back!

Chicago Diner

To quote VG, “HOLY YUM”!!!

Java Green

Last night we ate at Java Green in DC. I’d been there once before, BB (before blog) and knew we had to stop there. My mom had the veggie burger, Pete had the tempeh sandwich, and I had the grilled tofu sandwich. Everything was fantastic! We all highly recommend it.

We’re Moving!

Well kids, the big day has finally arrived. As I type this, there are movers taking all of my earthly belongings and packing them onto a large truck. As soon as everything is loaded, my mom, Pete, and I are packing up our suitcases into the Prius and heading out on our cross-country journey. I am so, so, SO excited to get back to Seattle. But it has been so hard to say goodbye to our life here in Virginia, especially to all the amazing friends I made.

So I probably won’t be blogging much for a while. I downloaded the wordpress app onto my phone, so if we eat any interesting meals, I’ll be sure to post them. My bar review classes start in June, and studying will occupy almost all of my time until I take the bar in July. I’ll try and post when I can, but it probably won’t be too often. I still be reading your blogs as much as possible, but not commenting. Just don’t forget all about me, because I will be back as soon as life settles down a little bit!

Here’s a graduation pic for you!
